Welcome

What is The Sexual Dysfunction Association?

The Sexual Dysfunction Association, (formerly the Impotence Association), is a charitable organisation, to help sufferers of male and female sexual problems and their partners and to raise awareness of the extent to which sexual conditions affect the general population.  Originally, the charity focused on helping individuals with erectile dysfunction (impotence) but now it covers all forms of male and female sexual problems.

When was The Association set up?

The Association was set up on 4 July 1995.

What is The Association’s mission?

The SDA, as the only national patient association of its kind, is committed to helping and supporting people, and partners of people, with all forms of sexual dysfunction by:

  • Raising awareness to sexual functioning and wellbeing
  • Providing information and education on male and female sexual problems
Improving the public’s understanding of the seriousness and causes of male and female sexual disorders.

What is the status of The Association?

The Sexual Dysfunction Association was given charitable status in June 1996.  Registered Charity Number 1104691.

How is The Association funded?

The Association is funded by educational grants, donations and membership subscriptions.

The Association is a non-profit making organisation and does not recommend the use of any one particular treatment, but puts sufferers in contact with specialists around the country.

Why is a Helpline (0870 7743571) needed?

Often people feel unable to discuss a sexual condition with their family doctor. Nearly 9 out of 10 men with erectile dysfunction do not tell their GPs about the problem and 6 out of 10 do not even tell their partners. Results of The Sexual Dysfunction Association Survey (released Feb 98) highlighted the level of suffering sexual conditions, such as erectile dysfunction, can cause:

21% of sufferers said erectile dysfunction was the cause of their relationship break-up

62% of sufferers suffered a loss of self esteem.

The Association has received thousands of calls from sufferers, their partners and the medical profession. Many of the sufferers who called are now receiving appropriate treatment.

What information do you have available?

Callers can request general information on the causes and treatment of sexual dysfunction and a list of specialists in their area. Callers can also receive information related to specific enquiries and a wide range of fact sheets are available in a downloadable format from this site.

Booklets available by post include: Sex and the Heart; Sex and Diabetes and Sex and the Prostate; and details of Schedule 2 - the Department of Health restrictions on treatments for erectile dysfunction.

What about long term support for sufferers?

The Association runs a membership programme called "Friends of the Sexual Dysfunction Association". Friends receive up-to-date information on sexual dysfunction. Membership works both ways as the subscriptions not only help fund the Helpline but also provide literature and information to sufferers, their partners and the medical profession.
